Plethora of Fashion

My room is back in order; yes I still live at home. Granted I have the best room in the house ;) After finally getting my own room at the age of 19, I decided from then on, to keep my room a sanctuary; a place of comfort and inspiration for creativity. The most abundant thing in my room is anything fashion. From my open closet of purple hangers filled with all sorts of unique clothing, to my desk where the area is caked with fashion books and magazines. At this point in time, I have the most magazine subscriptions I have ever had. The time has come to reveal my favorite and most essential reading for ideas.

1. Lucky Magazine
I can thank my sister for introducing this one to me, for it is and always has been exactly what she claimed it to be: way ahead of the trends. This is the one magazine most people have not heard of and thank god for it. They ARE ahead of the trends, more than Vogue. While Vogue shows us the hottest Runway looks that will transfer to the streets, they seem to forget one minor detail: the looks of the Runway are inspired by Street Style, and Street Style is exactly where Lucky pays attention. So really, Vogue along with all the other minor magazines that copy it don’t realize they are already behind. This magazine is the best for ideas.

2. Vogue
To add to my hypocrisy for the day, I still enjoy Vogue. It is the one fashion magazine you should read. It is a good reference to Runway shows, designers and models that are up and coming. And anyone even remotely interested in the Fashion Biz can consider this the bible. When I say fashion magazine, Vogue is probably the first thing to pop into your head. My fluency with designers and photographers has come from reading Vogue.

3. Harper’s Bazaar
Somewhat of an offshoot from Vogue, Harper’s has always been a close second in the fashion world. If you want to rebel from Vogue, read Harper’s. The articles combine wit and fashion and ultimately focus on fashion, something Vogue strays from. Unfortunately, Harper’s is gettin’ the chop once my subscription is up. No substance.

4. Nylon
For the longest time, I loved this magazine. I could flip through it for two seconds and have an outfit inspired from the pages on my body. This of course was back in 2005 when they weren’t as popular. Now, they are like The Buffalo Exchange: Trendy and departed from their original audience. This is an inevitable transfer that takes place with anything that is original and unique, it is ripped apart and remolded for the plain masses, usually to stay in business. Nevertheless, last year I caught myself one to many times reading the mag at bookstores and grocery stores so I decided pay for a year of trendy ideas that never really inspired me in the end :(

5. Teen Vogue!
Don’t Judge. Seriously, don’t. It all started when I bought the Teen Vogue handbook that was intended for teens and young adults who were interested in getting into the fashion biz. I bought it (great reference book!) and in the back, was a free year’s subscription to the magazine. It was free and it would just serve as another reference in my pile of magazines. For $6 a year, I feel they are more like Lucky magazine in the fact that they pay attention to street style. Knowing that their readers are teens, who are generally thrifty, Teen Vogue shows some wicked combinations of clothing I can afford! What they advertise is wearable to the young girl in her twenties minus the wild hair and neon colored nails. Don’t judge. It really is a great reference to another kind of fashion: the fearless fashionable teens :)

Any other suggestions for amazing fashion magazines???? I also enjoy Men’s Nylon and GQ to satisfy my love of men’s fashion ;)
