With a couple thoughts on yesterday’s post, The Man Repeller, I began to think back to some of my most epic/disastrous fashion risks. What I began to think was many fashion misfits start off with some catastrophic outfits. The reason, I believe, is each misfit is trying to define themselves. We define ourselves by being outrageous, fashion wise, and in general. Establishing this reputation with a floral maxi skirt worn with…say, some pink high tops; this is a good way to go. Not that I wore that.
I feel as though I had some extreme ensembles, but over time, I learned what worked and what didn’t. After that period of mismatched, my style could do no wrong. It was like learning all of the elements in Biology to where I could go on and create my own experiments. I learned about fashion through risk and countless failures to come out with my own style. So the question at hand: Is it necessary to be a fashion misfit to create style?
Yes. Obviously speaking from personal experience, but the average person from teens to the twenties has no idea what a fashion risk is. They come off as fashionable, but they pay attention to what is hot right now. The ones who are ridiculed for being the misfits are creating the trends of tomorrow! I would never have learned my style had I not showed up one day in white tights and a short red skirt, being called Little Bo Peep. So take a frickin risk ladies and gents. It’s just fashion.
