Oink Joint

Last night, I re-watched one of my favorite films Whip It.

The film never really claims a time period, but it seems as though it takes place in present time. On that note, the costumes for each character take on the essence of another time....like, say, late 70's early 80's punk and a rejuvenating mixture of Emo/Indie grunge. You have Ellen Page's character (the blue haired one in the picture), and her style is a few familiar t-shirts accompanied by flouncy skirts, leggings and some army style boots.

The style just seems so raw and yet so feminine. But the interesting part that came to mind was Austin, Texas. They are considered a pretty up and coming town these days, full of young folk and plenty of good music and happenings. The fashion seems to have stood still in time! And that's great!

I remember when I was about twelve, I was in Woodbury, GA, which most of ya'll have never heard of. Anyway, I was there visiting family, and one day I took a trip to my first consignment store (that I know of ;) and there, I found so many good vintage finds for nothing!!!!!! My sister snagged a Pepsi Challenge T-shirt for 80 cents!! Can you believe it!?!? My sister started to tell me that this part of the country was probably behind on current fashion, so they had an abundance of vintage items, and had no idea to charge much for them. Plus, no one considered the stuff we loved to be fashionable, sooooo....there was no worry about other vintage shoppers snaking the good stuff.

Rewind back to Whip It, they showed a consignment store, where Ellen Page bought her army boots. Can you imagine the cheap, yet amazing finds!? We get back to their style, and you think, what a great time it was to dress like that!!!! My friend Brittany recalled that being her favorite way to dress, when everyone had a specific trend they were going for. Mine was skinny jeans, vintage logo t-shirts and chuck Taylor high tops. With these kids in Texas, perhaps that is what is fashionable at the moment.

These days persons of all ages are following the same trends. You have tweens trying to dress like girls in their twenties, and girls in their twenties trying to define a style of their own by borrowing from the women in their thirties! Everyone is too busy trying to dress uniquely to the point where we all look alike! Maybe being fashionable has become a trend?
