The Ballet Flat

My love of ballet flats began in High School. Of course, at the time, Ballet flats were no where to be found.

The actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was the first person I saw rocking actual ballet slippers! I remember, she was wearing a one shouldered-LBD (little black dress) with black ballet shoes, with the lace-up ankle straps and all! I know some people think Maggie is atrocious looking, but at the time, I LOVED her style!!! And I still love her today.

After seeing that, I was gung ho about getting some ballet flats or ballet slippers, whichever I could find :) I stumbled onto one pair from Payless. It was the only shoe of it's kind at the store and of course it came in my size 12 (God, I wish I still had those)........ They were an ivory color with a light rose floral pattern on the sides. They looked amazing! They were super comfortable and they were only $12!!!! I remember the day I wore them, was the day of a field trip to the Museum of Art in Balboa Park. I got allot of compliments especially because I wore them with rolled up jeans and thought it would be cute to tie this ribbon, rope, string thingy around my foot, up and around my ankles to exude the ballet slipper look. It was sick!

I also proceeded to buy a pair of ballet slippers (the ones that ballerinas wear) for my prom. They were pink and about $11. They looked a little too slouchy for my pink prom dress (see post) so I wore heels instead. But I wore the hell out of those slippers. They were on my feet for the majority of my freshmen year of college. hehe

The point I am trying to make with all this back story is that, yes Ballet flats are amazing! They are cute, cheap and classic looking, not to mention, comfortable! In my case, I had a deep love affair with the shoe on a more personal level then just a good trend. I am 6'3, therefor, heels are not my first option for going out. I like to wear something that won't make me tower over everyone like I already do! The other half is that they make my HUGE feet look petite and delicate. Let's just say, the Disney Cinderella stepsisters, I can relate to, feet wise. But in the case of a ballet flat, they take my stepsister feet and make them into Cinderella's feet. Get it? God love ballet flats.

Next up- Ballet slippers, the ones that you dance in....to be covered with red paint and glitter-as if the Wizard of Oz was a ballet and Dorothy's ruby slippers had to be converted.....Cheers
