Come Fly with Me!

As I am in contact with Delta to possibly become a Flight Attendant, I am on the thought process of the Stewardess! Before they were called Flight Attendants (aka: before it was deemed inappropriate) the Stewardess belonged to a different kind of profession. This profession required a certain weight, certain hairstyles, and vibrant uniforms; also, you had to be female!

I purchased this book called Stewardess: Come Fly with Me! in Washington DC and I couldn’t help but want to share some of the history of a profession I might be going toward. Mind you, I’m in for the traveling ;)

Each airline had their own training and it was an honor to be chosen to attend a Stewardess school. They were trained in food service (back when the food was served and there was an actual menu!), first aid, emergency procedures, and airplane construction. Hair was of the utmost importance, as most of the women wore wigs to ensure perfect hair. The outfits were tailored with fashionable dresses accompanied by matching hats, coats and gloves. This was a different time. Flying was an experience, something of a treat. The Stewardess was there to serve your every need. From the delicious Fine dining menu to the actual restaurant look inside the plane. What I wouldn’t give to have lived back in that time period! Or to own a couple of the Stewardess outfits....
***10 points for anyone who recognizes the uniforms above and what movie (think of Penny Lane) these uniforms were recreated in.
